1.1.0! Changes (and polish!)
Well, here we are! I am once again able to modify the game now that the jam is over, know what that means? It's time for 1.1.0! and with it, the rest of the content/logic that I'd planned to initially add but never really got around to.. First, lets take a look at some user feedback, shall we?
Feedback
Feedback: This game is too hard, is it supposed to be this hard?
Yes, and no, there was a bug that caused powerups to stop spawning after a point, so yes, it's supposed to be this hard, and no, you're supposed to be a bit more powerful then you were, but we'll talk about powerups later.
Feedback: The stars! Get rid of em! I can't see the bullets!
After a careful and tedious palette swap, stars are now a bit more subtle, so they're now less easy to mistake for projectiles
Feedback: Those tiny enemies! they're Tiny!
They were pretty tiny eh? We've increased their size to make it a bit easier to see em!
Feedback: I can't continue!?
The end of game text may have been slightly misleading, the whole "Continue?" countdown was a throwback to old arcade games, and there was no way to "insert more coins". sadly this has been removed to reduce confusion.
Feedback: Submit score screen is awful.
It really really is, but that's been fixed to allow keyboard input in 1.1.0 (like a true Canadian, I'm sorry,)
Feedback: The volume is like, all wrong, whoever did the music sucks.
The volume was purposely turned down by myself, and I can see that was a mistake, so I've reverted it, and has nothing to do with the amazing work the sound creators did.
Feedback: Shouldn't the ship hitbox be like.. tiny? that would be better, and stuff.
No. the ship hitbox is fine, in fact it's already smaller then the ship itself, suggesting it should be some tiny 10x10 box in the middle of the ship is a pretty dumb suggestion.
Feedback: Love the music, is it somewhere that I don't need to play the game to listen to?
Yes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LEraJ_ik8SE&list=PLQl74sd_rGFRxMqkXjbP2RuTjWGfmq-YQ
Bugs
So, that's feedback rounded off, now lets talk bugs! what was broken, why was it broken, and how was it fixed?!
Powerups, where are they?
this one is a bit tricky to explain, but lets look at the set of powerups like a bucket, you have 10 powerups in the bucket, you take it out, put it on the screen to be collected by the player, and then put back afterwards.
The problem? They weren't finding their way back to the bucket, they were being thrown in the trash, so after the bucket was empty, it just would not spawn any more, so now that we're putting them back in the bucket, we can re-use them without fear of running out.
Missiles, where did they go?
This is actually a simple one, my logic de-spawns any projectiles after they've left the screen, the problem? Missiles travel in an arc behind you, so if you're too far back, they will fly offscreen behind you and de-spawn, the solution? just move the threshold, easy peasy, lemon squeezy.
Surprisingly few major bugs for a game scraped together in a week!
Improvements
So, what didn't get in before the deadline that's in now? here's a quick list!
- New bullet/baddie bullet images - now with more visibility!
- More Difficulties - Tired of the amount you suck? suck less with easy or more with hard mode!
- Enhanced Submit Score screen - Easier input with keyboard makes submitting fun!
- Enhanced High Score Screen - Didn't make it to the top 10, but want to see how you did overall? now you can!
- Asteroids - The original idea for the game, finally made it in, don't crash!
- Mute Sound/Music - Don't want to mute the whole tab? there's a sound mute button on main page now!
- Slightly Longer Levels - Can't get enough? now there's ~20% more!
